Hyannis Bests Bourne

HYANNIS - Dale Cornstubble was smiling because he had just driven in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

But Cornstubble was even happier because his infield single gave Hyannis a 3-2 win over the Bourne Braves and let the Mets keep pace in a tight Cape Cod Baseball League Western Division.

"The playoff race is discussed every day before the game," Cornstubble said. "We always want to know who is in what position and what we need to do."

With the win, Hyannis (20-18) moves within one point of Falmouth (20-17-1) for first place in the West. Falmouth lost its matchup with Cotuit (19-17-2) last night, 4-2. The Kettleers are tied with the Mets in second place.

Bourne (18-19-1) is fourth, three points behind Hyannis and Cotuit.

The Mets and Braves entered the bottom of the ninth tied 2-2. With one out, Chris Dominguez (Louisville) reached on a single, his second of the night.

Dominguez then stole second and third on his own. It was a surprising move because Bourne catcher Brandon Bantz (Dallas Baptist) had caught all four Hyannis runners trying to steal to that point - and Dominguez had just five stolen bases going into the game.

"I was just looking for a good jump," Dominguez said. "That's what we try to do. We try to steal a lot of bags. Coach lets me steal so I try to do it when I can."

With Dominguez on third and two outs, Cornstubble (Central Michigan) hit a sharp ground ball to the left side. Ross Wilson (Alabama) made a diving stop at third base, but couldn't make the throw in time, allowing Dominguez to score the winning run.

Hyannis manager Rick Robinson was reserved after the game despite the exciting conclusion. The Mets have just six games left and Robinson knows it will be a fight to the finish.

"I think it's going to come down to the last couple of games," Robinson said.

"Cotuit is starting to play well, Falmouth is starting to fall off just a little bit. That's just part of this league and the way our division has been all year long."
