BOURNE - The Bourne Braves scored nine runs in the first four innings and held on to beat the fading Orleans Cardinals 9-4 in Cape Cod Baseball League play yesterday.
Orleans - the far-and-away Eastern Division leader for much of the season - has lost five straight, dropping to 23-15-2. Yesterday's loss cost the Cardinals another chance to clinch the East crown outright, although the day's other results gave them a guaranteed playoff berth.
The Mariners and Cardinals both have four games left in the regular season; the Whitecaps have just three.
Bourne (19-20-1) snapped a two-game skid and improved its slim chances for a playoff berth in the West. The Braves have 39 points, fourth in the division but only five fewer than Hyannis, which took over first place from Falmouth last night.
Orleans took the lead in the top of the first yesterday when Gary Brown (CS-Fullerton) tripled and scored on an infield hit by Tim Wheeler (Sacramento State). But Bourne tied it in the bottom half as Jordan Henry (Ole Miss) collected the first of his four hits and scored on an error.
The Braves scored three runs with two outs in the second and four more in the fourth to ice it.
Henry went 4-for-5, James Williamson (William and Mary) was 2-for-4 and Brandon Bantz (Dallas Baptist) went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Brown went 2-for-4 for Orleans, and Angelo Songco (Loyola Marymount) connected for his sixth home run in the fourth inning.
