Over 6,000 fans gathered at Doran Park at 7 p.m. Wednesday to watch the Braves and Kettleers face off in Game 1 of the Championship Series.
Braves ace Alex Wimmers started things off from the mound in his usual impressive style, with 2 strikeouts in the top of the first.
But the real action started in the bottom of the inning. A combination of hot Braves bats and a disoriented Cotuit pitcher scored the Braves a whopping seven runs. Kyle Roller and Pierre LePage each had two RBIs, and Stefen Romero, Ben Klafczynski and Zack MacPhee had one apiece in the first.
Cotuit scored one run in the second, but the Braves got two more runs of their own on an error and a walk. With the Braves ahead 9-1, Cotuit starter Andres Caceres was relieved by RHP Navery Moore. Roller immediately hit a 2 run double off of Moore, and Rob Segedin quickly followed with a 2 run single. Incredibly, the Braves led the Kettleers 13-1 after just two innings.
Klafczynski and Chris Wallace each had an RBI in the fifth inning, making the score 15-1. By this time, the fog had begun rolling in and visibility was limited. (The second-base umpire mistakenly called Wallace's double a homerun, much to the surprise of everyone watching). The Kettleers attempted to rally in the top of the sixth, scoring four more runs despite the heavy fog.
The Braves' pitching was also integral to the win. In four innings Wimmers threw 97 pitches and had 8 strikeouts, 3 walks, and 5 hits on just 1 run. RHP Michael Dimock kept things under control during his two innings of relief.
After two temporary fog delays, the game was officially called in the sixth. Although Cape League rules state that playoff games must go all 9 innings, both teams agreed that the game should be called for the safety of their players. The final score was Braves 15, Kettleers 5.
The Braves travel to Cotuit tomorrow. They will play the Kettleers at 3 p.m. in hopes of clinching the championship!
