BOURNE, Mass.—The Bourne Braves (6-3) issued nine free passes to first in a 7-2 loss against the Brewster Whitecaps (5-4) Sunday night at Doran Park.

Five of those walks came from Vanderbilt starter Patrick Raby who pitched four innings giving up two runs off of two hits and five walks, striking out two.

Raby was hit hard in the first inning by fellow SEC player Grant Rooker (Mississippi State) and was unable to get out of a bases-loaded jam where he walked Matt Davis (Virginia Commonwealth) to put the Whitecaps on top, 1-0. An RBI single by Zack Gahaga (UNC Chapel Hill) advanced the lead 2-0.

Gahagan went 2 for 3 on the night with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. He also made a leaping grab to double up Willy Yahn (UConn) at first in bottom of the sixth.

The five walks caused most of Raby’s troubles, who was able to buckled down in the second and get two strikeouts that were flanked by David MaKinnon’s (Hartford) grab at first to rob leadoff Logan Warmoth (UNC Chapel Hill) of a single.

Braves’ offense was unable to get to Tyler Zuber (Arkansas State) early. Zuber cruised through the top of the lineup in the first, racking up a strikeout and using his defense to sit the Braves down in order.

Zuber finished his night going six innings giving up two earned runs off five hits and retiring seven Braves’ batters.

In the second, Evan Mendoza (NC State) was able to rope a single out to left field for the first base runner of the game. But the Braves were unable to build off the two-out hit.

Yahn broke the shutout in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single to score David MacKinnon (Hartford.)

Yahn continued to play the hot corner with ease, making a leaping grab to land on the base and throw to first for a double play.

Chris Holba (East Carolina) relieved Raby in the fifth. Going one inning, giving up one earned run off two hits and a walk.

The Braves used six pitchers tonight with the bullpen going five innings giving up four earned runs off four hits, walking four and striking out four.

Connor Wong (Houston) hit a double in the bottom of the sixth which was followed up by McKinnon who hit a single up the middle. Yahn continued to bring in runners as he smacked a single to score Wong.

That would be the last run scored. The Braves stranded their lowest amount of runners, leaving just four on, but only getting six hits on the night.

Connor McVey (Cincinnati) ended his eight-game hitting streak Sunday going 0 for 3 with a walk.

The Braves head back on the road at 6 Monday to face the Hyannis Harbor Hawks (1-7.) Braves’ probable is Joshua Shapiro (Marshall.)
