Battle of brothers: Kyler and Christian Fedko square off in early-season meeting

By: Carson Field

Kyler and Christian Fedko have never been rivals. They played high school ball together. They’re on the same college team at UConn. Off the field, they’re best friends.

But, for the first time ever, they aren’t teammates.

Kyler was selected to Bourne’s squad, while the Harwich Mariners picked up Christian. The brothers, who have never played for different teams at any level, will play back-to-back games against each other on Wednesday (at Bourne) and Thursday (at Harwich).

“It’s actually crazy,” Christian Fedko said. “It’s going to be fun, though, because we have a really competitive household, but we’ve never done this before on a real stage.”

At UConn, both were crucial components for a team that placed second in the 2019 Stillwater Regional. A sophomore, Christian batted .271 with three home runs, while Kyler .247 with five home runs. Both are listed as infielders, but Kyler played significant time in right field for the Huskies.

Even with so much in common, the brothers used this rare chance to tease one another and exchange smack talk.

“Me and Paul (Gozzo) went over there and told him we were going to give him a little work,” Kyler Fedko said. “Nothing too crazy, but it was fun to kind of mess with him.”

Between Bourne and Harwich, there are five Huskies on the teams’ respective rosters. This only enhances the newfound competition between siblings.

“I got three guys over there (in Bourne) on UConn, saying, ‘oh, I know how to get you out,” Christian Fedko said. “And I’m like, ‘I know how to get you out.’

“It’s gonna be a good, competitive game.”

Kyler and Christian aren’t the only Fedkos invested in this week’s series. Their father, John, plans to attend Wednesday’s game.

More than anything, John will root for his sons to succeed and compete at their highest level.

“I think he just wants both of us to do well, no matter who wins,” Christian Fedko said.

According to Kyler, these games have been circled on John’s calendar for a while.

“He really has no bias in the rooting, but he’s really excited for the matchup,” Kyler Fedko said. “He’s never been able to do this, so it will be cool.”

Initially, the first of this two-game set was scheduled for Tuesday. But, because of poor field conditions at Harwich’s Whitehouse Field, officials pushed the game back to Thursday.

Due to an unspecified injury, Kyler is unsure whether or not he can play in either of this week’s games against the Mariners. Regardless of his status for these contests, Kyler hopes his brother flourishes.

“I’ll be rooting for him,” Kyler Fedko said. “I want us to win, obviously, but I hope he does well.”
