Braves edge out win in extras at Hyannis

The Braves (2-0) and Harbor Hawks (0-3) played another tight game Sunday, as the Braves travelled to McKeon Park for a rematch. Bourne came out on top again in a 10-inning 5-4 win.

Toby Handley (Stony Brook) propelled the team to a 2-0 record with his go-ahead single in the 10th to score Nate Cardy (Gannon.) Overall, Handley went 2 for 5 and hit .429.

A strong outing by Braves’ starting pitcher AJ Moore (Kennesaw State) held Bourne ahead 4-1 until he was relieved by Andrew Wantz (UNC Greensboro) in the sixth.

Moore finished the night after five innings, giving up three hits, an earned run and striking out seven.

Bourne struck early with two runs in the first against Harbor Hawk Alex Eubanks (Clemson) whose line on the night was five innings, seven hits, three earned runs and three strikeouts.

The bats came alive for the Harbor Hawks in the eighth facing Zach Spangler (Kent State) whose three-quarter arm action gave way to a two-run home run blast from Carl Stajduahr (New Mexico.)

Stajduahr went 2 for 4 and teed off against all three Braves’ pitchers; accounting for three of the four RBI by the Harbor Hawks.

Justin Yurchak (Binghamton) continued to be a run producer, but got help from teammates tonight as the four RBI were spread around the top half of the batting order.

Conner O’Neil (Cal State Northridge) received the win, pitching two innings of two-hit baseball and racking up four strikeouts.

Defense was a weakness for the Harbor Hawks, who committed four errors.

The Braves continue to play clean defense-being the only team left in the league with a 1.000 fielding percentage.

All but two Braves racked up hits Sunday-but hitters failed to bring in 12 runners left on base, making the two game total 23 in the LOB column.

The team is back home 6 p.m. Monday at Doran Park as they take on the Cotuit Kettleers. Probables are Bourne’s Brady Miller (Western Oregon) and Kettleers’ Cal Becker (Sonoma State.)
