Three Members of 2023 Braves Selected on Third Day of MLB Draft

Three more players to appear for the 2023 Bourne Braves were selected as the MLB draft concluded on Tuesday. Logan Evans, Brett Callahan and Joe Vogatsky joined Matt Duffy and Patrick Reilly, who were picked on Monday in the fourth and fifth round, respectively. All five played for Bourne this summer but had already left by the time they were drafted.

Evans was taken in the 12th round, 367th overall by the Seattle Mariners. He spent his first two seasons at Penn State, and his latter two at Pitt. In 39 collegiate games (23 starts), he posted a 6.78 ERA with 7.6 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9. He made three starts for the Braves this season, allowing seven runs while only walking three in 14 innings of work.

Callahan was selected in the 13th round, 380th overall by the Detroit Tigers. He was part of the early wave of Braves players this summer, and posted a .375 OBP in seven games before departing. He’s coming off back-to-back monster seasons at St. Joseph’s, where he put up OPS’s of 1.069 and 1.048, respectively.

The Braves’ 2023 draft class rounded out with another pitcher. Joe Vogatsky went in the 14th round, 424th overall to the Toronto Blue Jays. He displayed impressive mid-90s velocity with Bourne, and allowed just one earned run in 6 1/3 innings. He had a breakout season as a reliever for James Madison University, as he posted a 3.34 ERA and 10.9 K/9 in 21 games.

Four of the five ’23 Braves who were selected were pitchers. No current members of the team were drafted, though most of Bourne’s most highly touted players aren’t yet eligible.
