Six Former Braves Selected on Second Day of MLB Draft

Seven Former Braves Selected on Second Day of MLB Draft

By Mojo Hill

After a quartet of former Bourne Braves were taken on the first night of the MLB draft, seven more were taken during rounds 3-10 on Monday.

The first two taken on the middle day of the draft were Matt Duffy and Patrick Reilly, both of whom pitched for Bourne this summer. Duffy made three starts, in addition to his eight innings of work for Bourne last summer. Reilly, from Vanderbilt, made just one start and allowed a run in five innings. He struck out 53 in 43 1/3 innings of work for the Commodores this season. Duffy was taken in the fourth round by the Boston Red Sox, while Reilly was selected in the fifth round — 140th overall — by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Reilly’s slot holds an approximate $455.60k value.

Duffy and Reilly are the only players selected so far who have played for Bourne this summer.

The next former Brave to be selected was Alabama pitcher Hunter Furtado, who threw 21 1/3 innings for last year’s Bourne team. The Pirates took him in the sixth round, 167th overall, with a $351.40k value. He had a 9.4 K/9 in three seasons for the Crimson Tide and a 5.06 ERA in his time with Bourne.

Pepperdine shortstop John Peck was selected in the seventh round, an even 200th overall ($267k value). He had an .855 OPS in three seasons for the Waves, though just a .530 OPS in 39 games for Bourne.

Kansas State shortstop Nick Goodwin was taken later in the seventh round, 214th overall, with a $238.70k slot value. He struggled in his time with the Braves two years ago, with a .573 OPS in 76 plate appearances, but he thrived with Harwich last summer and posted an .815 OPS in 41 games. He hit .273/.369/.505 across three seasons with Kansas State.

Ty Cummings, a pitcher out of Campbell University, was taken three picks later. The Seattle Mariners picked him 217th overall, with an approximate slot value of $232.90k. He was dominant in 17 innings of work for Bourne last year, allowing just one run in 17 innings of work while striking out 16.

The last former Brave drafted on Monday was South Carolina shortstop Braylen Wimmer. He played for Bourne two years ago, and hit .282 with 16 RBIs in 23 games. He’s coming off his best season yet, where he hit .304 with a .970 OPS in the SEC. The Colorado Rockies took him in the eighth round, 232nd overall, with an approximate value of $209.40k.

The draft will conclude with rounds 11-20 on Tuesday, starting at 2 p.m.
